1. There / their / they’re
- There znamená tam a používá se jako příslovce místní. Může se také vyskytovat ve větě, kde je nevyjádřený podmět.
- Their je přivlastňovací zájmeno ve třetí osobě čísla množného. Tedy česky jejich.
- They’re je prostě jen stažený tvar spojení they are – oni jsou.
Ukážeme si to na příkladech:
- There are two trees in the garden.
- The students took their bags.
- They’re going to the cinema tonight.
2. Affect není effect
Ačkoli se na první pohled může zdát, že rozlišit tato dvě slova je jednoduché, zdání klame. Když je vidíte vedle sebe, je to jednoduché. Pokud mají studenti použít jen jedno, často tápou v tom které.
- Affect znamená ovlivnit či zapříčinit.
- Effect je výsledek či dopad něčeho.
Pomůckou nám může být, že affect je skoro vždy slovesem a effect skoro vždy podstatným jménem. Neplatí to ale úplně vždy. Affect může znamenat i rozrušení/afektovanost a effect může být používáno jako sloveso – to však není příliš častým jevem.
Příklady:
- Internet use significantly affects students’ ability to use correct spelling.
- The effect of his speech was very positive.
3. Am I nauseous?
Nausea je nevolnost. Pokud chcete říct, že je vám nevolno, tak řekněte I am nauseated. Pokud řeknete nauseous, říkáte, že vyvoláváte nevolnost u ostatních – jste nechutní či odporní. A to o sobě nejspíš tvrdit nechcete.
Jak tedy správně používat:
- I was nauseated after eating a sandwich there.
- This week-old cookie must be nauseous.
4. Fewer nebo less
- Less se používá u nepočitatelných podstatných jmen.
- Few a fewer se oboje používá pro vyjádření malého počtu počitatelných substantiv.
Důkaz místo slibů:
- It takes less courage to remain silent than to say the truth.
- Fewer than ten people were actually brave enough to tell the truth in that moment.
